The Expectancy Indicator Of Australia - 1362 Words
The Life Expectancy Indicator is a statistical measure of how long a person may live, based on the year of their birth, their current age and other demographic factors including gender. The Life Expectancy Indicator from 2014 stated that Australians were expected to live to be approximately 82.5 years old. In comparison to Americaââ¬â¢s record high of 78.8, this is a huge difference in time. I believe that the expectancy of life in Australia is longer than most other counties due to the Environment Performance Index that was discussed above. I think that there is a direct and precise correlation between a clean environment and a clean body. Overall, Australia is also less densely populated, even in the bigger cities, this reduces the spread ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Its job is to carry out the day-to-day government and administration of the country and to execute the laws. The Executive Council consists of the ministers in the government. In practice, the executive government does more than simply administer the government and execute the laws passed by parliament. Since the government must control the House of Representatives to survive, in practice the executive also determines what legislation shall be debated and passed by the House of Representatives. Because budget appropriations (parliamentary allocations of money) and tax proposals must originate in the House of Representatives, the executive arm thus has the dominant power in the political system. However, the executive may not necessarily control the Senate numbers and may be obstructed by or forced to compromise with the groups that control that chamber. Prime Minister. The Miller s The Canterbury Tales - 1624 Words
ââ¬Å"The Millerââ¬â¢s Tale,â⬠part of Geoffrey Chaucerââ¬â¢s larger work, ââ¬Å"The Canterbury Tales,â⬠is a bawdy and irreverent story about lust, deception, and consequences. Chaucerââ¬â¢s work centers around four main characters: John is a dimwitted carpenter, Alison is Johnââ¬â¢s young and wife, Nicholas is a scholar who resides in Johnââ¬â¢s household, and Absolon is a priestââ¬â¢s assistant with a romantic fixation on Alison. Throughout the tale, deceptive plots and questionable decisions abound, and no one is completely innocent of wrongdoing. Of course, like with most any other story involving lies and selfish pursuits, every character gets an informal education on natural consequences. It is worth noting that Nicholas is the only character in the story with anyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦John is a controlling and foolish man who considers his wife as much his possession as any other material thing that his wealth has afforded him, and for th is he learns an emotionally and physically painful lesson about just how little control he really has. Immediately after describing John, Chaucer turns to the carpenterââ¬â¢s attitude about his young wife, saying, ââ¬Å"Jalous he was, and heeld hire narwe in a cage, / For she was wilde and yong, and he was old, / And deemed himself been lik a cokewoldâ⬠(Chaucer, 116-118). One cannot help but raise a proverbial eyebrow at Johnââ¬â¢s denial of Alisonââ¬â¢s agency. In Paul A. Olsenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Poetic Justice in The Millerââ¬â¢s Tale,â⬠the author asserts that, ââ¬Å"The possessive and stupid, the Carpenter Johns, deserve to lose what they have even as they are eyeing a bigger take; they deserve to be set down for mad even as they think they are getting a corner on Godââ¬â¢s secretsâ⬠(para. 9). Indeed, John suffers these exact fates. Having been convinced by Nicholas that God would send down a great flood, John hangs three tubs from his ceiling and falls asleep in one, secure in the belief that this plan will save himself, Alison, and Nicholas from Godââ¬â¢s wrath. The next morning, when John awakens in confusion and cuts down his tub, he crashes to the floor and suffers physical injury. Later, he sustains emotional injury through being labeled a

What Is The Church, Why Does It Matter - 1842 Words
Integrative Paper on What is the Church, Why Does it Matter? Nupur James Systematic Theology II Dr James E. Pedlar April 15th 2015 The Church is the most vital in God s plan, thus it must be in our own comprehension. In spite of the fact that numerous theologies have overlooked ecclesiology, the precept of the congregation is a vital segment of Christian truth. It is the most noticeable piece of Christian theology, and it is essentially joined with each other. The congregation is the body of Christ called by God s grace through faith in Christ to celebrate him together by serving him in his world. God s eternal plan has always been showed by him through people from different ages. In creation, God did not made individual but rather two, and two who are capable to make more. In the Flood, God saved not one individual, but the entire family. In Genesis 12, God calls Abram and guarantees that Abram s descendants will be as many as the stars in the sky or the sand at the seashore. In the Exodus, God not only deals with Moses, as well as with the country of Israel - twelve tribes embodied with different type of peopl e and characters (see Exod. 15:13-16). He gives laws and functions that ought to be worked out in the lives of people, as well as in the life of entire world. This gives us an idea that, how important Church is in sight of God. In todayââ¬â¢s society, everyone looks to find real love. They want to find ââ¬Å"the right oneâ⬠, get married, and live happily with that one person for as long as the world allows them. Some people will wait as long as it takes to find that special someone, while others find their true love in high school. We will write a custom essay sample on Pride and Prejudice Prediction Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Is it not amazing that we are given the opportunity to find our own love whenever we want? Then again, we are the only ones who know what we really want for ourselves. So, imagine if we did not get that opportunity of picking who we want to share our lives with for as long as we live. I have a hard time letting my mom pick out my clothes, let alone that special someone that I have to live the rest of my life with. In the book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, life is the total opposite of what it is today. Instead of you getting to choose who you want to be with, that person is chosen for you. Sounds like an awful time. The mother would have to pick the spouse and all she cared about was finding the wealthiest man. Two of the main characters that I want to talk about is Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. From what I have read of the book so far, all these two have done is bicker and disagree on almost everything. But, I think they will fall in love anyway. Even though they seem like total opposites, I think their personalities are a lot alike because they are both very out spoken. Elizabeth Bennet is the second oldest daughter of the five Bennet sisters. She is also known to be the most intelligent, but she is often compared to her sister, Jane, as being of lesser beauty. She is always speaking her mind even though it was frowned upon as a lady during that time period, and she often gets funny looks for what comes out of her mouth. She is very independent and is not fond of people who tell her what to do, which is what that time period was all about for the women. Elizabeth has a very strong personality and it is very hard to confuse her with anyone else. Mr. Darcy is a very wealthy man and is the master of Pemberley and he is also the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Mr. Darcy is very intelligent and honest and he is quite proud of it. His excess amount of pride causes him to look down on others in lower social classes and he kind of treats Elizabeth like this in the beginning of the book. So far in the book he learns to control his temper and class-consciousness and starts to fall in love with Elizabeth and begins to admire her strong character and different personality. Quote: ââ¬Å"Not at all,â⬠he replied; ââ¬Å"they were brightened by the exercise. â⬠ââ¬âMr. Darcy In the quote, Mr. Darcy is telling Miss Bingley that Elizabeth looked rather well after all the exercise of walking to see her ill sister Jane. While Miss Bingley was making fun of Elizabeth for having a dirty petticoat, Mr. Darcy completely looked past the fact that she was muddy and a little bit of wreck from the long walk by herself. In fact, he talks about how nice her eyes looked from the exercise and complimented her. I think this quote is pretty important because Mr. Darcy is all about himself and so full of pride and it seems like he only likes to look down on people. But, he compliments Elizabeth when Miss Bingley was making fun of her. He ignores the fact that she is dirty and looks like a mess and only notices how bright her eyes looked from the exercise. I think this is so much of a big deal because Mr. Darcy never compliments anyone and really never says anything nice at all. I thought he was just looking past all of the obvious flaws that everyone else noticed and only looked at what caught his eye. Quote: ââ¬Å"Elizabeth, having rather expected to affront him, was amazed at his gallantry; but there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody; and Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger. ââ¬âNarrator This quote comes from chapter 10 after Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth to dance with him. What Elizabeth said to Mr. Darcy after he asked her to dance was no because she thought he was going to despise her taste. She did not want to make a fool of herself, even though Mr. Darcy had no intention of doing so. The quote mentions how Elizabeth was amazed at his courtesy and thoughtfulness but there was a mixture of sweetness and mischievousness in the way he was acting and that she would have a hard time insulting anyone. I think this quote is important because even though Elizabeth just confronted him about the way she feels his attitude is towards her, she still finds him attractive in many ways. Then Mr. Darcy mentions how he had never been so bewitched by any other woman as he was by her. She just told him how she felt about him in a rude way and he still finds her so attractive, or that might have encouraged the way he feels towards her. I predict that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet will fall in love by the end of the book. Even though they disagree and argue a lot throughout the book, their personalities are a lot alike since they are both so outspoken. One thing that happens between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth is when she shows up to take care of her sister Jane and her petticoat is filthy but Mr. Darcy only talks about how nice her eyes looked from the exercise. Since he looks down on everyone else you would expect him to do the same during that moment. Another is when Elizabeth tells Mr. Darcy off and all they can both think about how attracted they are to one another. How to cite Pride and Prejudice Prediction Essay, Essays

He was at a loss as he wondered what kind of marketing campaign would ensure that every family that should use a WaterHarvester received one. If he could answer this question, he could see the potential to significantly improve the living conditions for many of the amazing people he had met over the last couple of weeks during his April 2007 visit. Just yesterday, the first prototype of the WaterHarvester had been installed and worked far better than he and his fellow students could have hoped for. We will write a custom essay sample on Rural Kenya or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It had been thrilling to see that the prototype had collected enough water with last nightââ¬â¢s short rainfall to give a cup of clean water to each of the familyââ¬â¢s children, cook a small meal, and still have some water left for the rest of the day! As Hermann thought about the possibilities he became very excited about what this product might mean for the regionââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"hardcore poor,â⬠a group that was hit the hardest by the harsh living conditions in rural Kenya. Once he got back o camp, he started to realize that there were a lot of answers needed before everybody in the community could benefit from gathering rainwater with the new WaterHarvester. Rainwater was a lot cleaner than the river water that the hardcore poor were used to drinking. He began wrestling with questions such as: How should it be marketed in a world where few of the conventional marketing communication channels even existed? How was he going to convince people to spend what was (for them ) a large amount of money when they did not even have enough to provide food for their families? And, would he need to consider changing the culturally entrenched practice of meeting at the river to gather the contaminated water that passed for drinking water? Having almost reached his tent he found himself lost in the most important marketing challenge of his young career. Tomorrow morning he was going to sit down with his group to discuss how they should proceed. If he wanted to be able to propose any workable solutions that could be put into motion in the short time he had left to spend in Kenya, it was going to be a very long night. Page 2 9B09A015 Free the Children (FTC), a Canadian non-governmental organization, was amongst the worldââ¬â¢s most successful charity organizations. The cofounders of FTC, Craig and Marc Kielburger, and their organization had been recognized for their efforts in numerous ways: the Order of Canada; the Worldââ¬â¢s Childrenââ¬â¢s Prize; and multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations, just to name a few. Craig had also been honoured with a Doctorate of Education from Nipissing University and the resulting relationships created unique and close ties between FTC and Nipissing University. To begin with, education students from Nipissing began to travel to Kenya, one of FTCââ¬â¢s largest operations, to help build new schools and work together with the local children of the Chebinie primary school in the Rift Valley province. As the success of the Kenya project grew, FTCââ¬â¢s in-country personnel began to realize that it would take more than building schools to convince all parents in the area to prioritize their childrenââ¬â¢s education rather than having them work. They began to believe that achievement of a higher level of participation in education would require an improvement in the economic and financial situation of the individual households. In other, similar circumstances, other charitable organizations had found one of the most effective ways to provide economic help for the hardcore poor in other parts of the world had been the introduction of micro-credit programs. 1 In 2006, FTC began to think more seriously about designing such a program for Chebinie and it asked Nipissingââ¬â¢s business school for help. Three students, along with one of their business professors, answered and embarked on a three-week trip to Kenya in April of 2007. While the design of a new micro-credit program for small businesses was the focus of their work, they very quickly realized that there was one other significant contributor to poverty in particular ââ¬â the lack of clean water. Working with groups of poor people throughout the world, FTC had learned that social change and lasting improvements in the standard of living only occur when the people it is working with assume ownership of the changes. As a consequence, its overriding operating philosophy was to ââ¬Å"teach people to fish,â⬠as opposed to ââ¬Å"give them fish. â⬠In the case of the WaterHarvester, this meant that any successful marketing program could not include outright gifting of the product and would likely need to cause a change in behaviour from the centuries-old practice of gathering water for domestic use from the river. Kenya lies on the western boundary of one of the most impoverished regions of the world ââ¬â sub-Saharan Africa. With seven million people living in environments as diverse as poverty itself, the Rift Valley region was one of the more populated areas in Kenya. While the lush highlands were home to one of the provinceââ¬â¢s most profitable industries (tea harvesting), other areas in the valley such as the constituency of Narok South struggled to provide the basic needs for their residents. Cattle and goat farming as well as small agriculture were the backbone of what passed for the economy in these poorer areas. Micro-credit programs lent primarily to women that lived in the most impoverished regions of the world (small amounts of money starting as low as $50). While these loans basically worked like any other loan, they were intended solely for small business start-ups to provide the recipient with the opportunity to elevate themselves and their families out of the poverty cycle. Muhammad Yunus, Banker to the Poor, Public Affairs, New York, 1999, p. 41. 1 Page 3 9B09A015 An estimated 54 per cent of the population lived below the poverty line in Narok South2. In rural areas for Kenya, this translated to monthly expenditures of approximately 1,846 Kenyan shillings (Ksh). 3 However, this was the average value for Kenya ââ¬â there were many households that lived on a lot less every month. Like everywhere in the world, poverty in Kenya was a multi-faceted problem with no single cause or solution. For developing nations such as Kenya, this means that poverty must be assessed based on a variety of factors. While monetary measures can be an important aspect of evaluating poverty, a simple and basic test of household assets is often just as important. Such a test often included a count of possessions including the number of farming animals belonging to the house, the ability to own and operate a kerosene lamp, or the nature of the houseââ¬â¢s roof. As a result, impoverished households were commonly classified into hardcore poor and ââ¬Å"just poorâ⬠segments. Kenya, in particular, showed how differentiated the face of poverty can be. While it was a sign of relative wealth in many nations to own a cell phone, it was not an uncommon sight in Kenya even in the poorest region of the country. The reason for this being that Kenya had recently undergone what was referred to as the ââ¬Å"cell phone revolution. While this may seem like an odd ââ¬Å"revolutionâ⬠to put in front of so many other developmental goals, it was the result of a very rational decision. Proper communication is one of the most important aspects of a well-functioning economy and it was much more cost-effective to install cell phone towers than to lay d own land lines. As a result, virtually everyone had access to a telephone at relatively low prices: at the same time, basic needs such as clean water were yet to be addressed. Another important indicator of poverty throughout the Rift Valley province was the type of roof used on the houses. It was estimated that throughout Kenyaââ¬â¢s rural areas, 23 per cent of households had thatched roofs. Within the villages around Chebinie (see Exhibits 1 and 2 for a description of the Chebinie area and the role of key stakeholders), this number was certainly higher. Although no verified numbers were available, after some quick counts Herrmann estimated that more than 70 per cent of households had thatched roofs. While just poor households were able to afford a tin roof, the hardcore poor were using thatched roofs, which were made of various types of grass and branches. The nature of oneââ¬â¢s roof was one of the more important status symbols in rural Kenya. With respect to clean water collection and use, the important issue was that straight-edged, water-repellent, tin-roofed households were able to easily obtain cleaner rainwater off their roofs by simply gathering the run-off using an eavestrough made from a hollowed-out tree branch ââ¬â something that is not possible to do on a circular, water-absorbing, thatched roof. à Access to enough clean water is one of multiple pressing issues a developing country faces on the road to sustainable development.

Le Petit Chef Case free essay sample
What should Gagne do? Specifically, which projects should she fund and why? How should she handle the executive meeting? A fair assessment of the situation at Le Petit Chef is that there are far too many projects on the table. This overflow has led to missed deadlines and therefore missed profit. The gap between LPC and other microwave manufacturers is closing fast and action is required. Essentially, Le Petit Chef needs a cornerstone development. There are five proposed projects: A new intelligent (fuzzy logic) line of microwaves, a low-cost version of an existing microwave line, an entirely new low-cost line, a quick heating model, and a larger cavity Liberte. When choosing which projects to fund, Gagne must evaluate them on three basic criteria: will this project differentiate one product from the next? Will this project spread the ramp;d team too thin? , and will this project provide a competitive advantage? For the short term, LPC should not attempt to enter the low-cost microwave market. We will write a custom essay sample on Le Petit Chef Case or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Le Petit Chef is correlated with high end, high performance appliances and trying to tackle a low cost market that is dominated by large companies such as Samsung and GE would not be appropriate. Because of this, both projects associated with a low end line should be crossed off Gagneââ¬â¢s list. However, perhaps in the future when the company is on more solid footing a low-end line can be attempted. Adding a larger cavity to the Liberte should also be cut because this just adds another component into the mix. Too many components that donââ¬â¢t overlap from one product to the next increases total cost and adaptability. Another reason to cut the larger cavity is because it really does nothing major to differentiate the product. Next, LPC should fund the implementation of a Fuzzy Logic microwave line. This would differentiate the product among high-end competitors, not put too much strain on ramp;d according to a senior design engineer, and promote the high-class label associated with Le Petit Chef. This project is absolutely necessary to undertake. Another project that should be funded is the development of a ââ¬Å"Liberte-expressâ⬠with a more powerful magnetron. This adds another vital differentiating feature, will be easy to develop, and be finished relatively quickly (6 months). At the meeting, Gagne simply needs to list the facts to the executives since there shouldnââ¬â¢t be too much convincing to do. She needs to present her product choices listed above rationally and stress the need for the company to stay true to its reputation by focusing on high-end appliances. She needs to alert the execs about how thin ramp;d is spread and she should probably prepare a list of projects that could be easily axed. She needs to stress the importance of allowing ramp;d to focus on less projects. The primary theme of her presentation should be realigning Le Petit Chef as the frontrunner in the microwave business. She also needs to outline the current financial issues and how the proposed projects will affect them. 2) What factors explain Le Petit Chefââ¬â¢s poor performance? What actions would you recommend to remedy the situation? Le Petit Chefââ¬â¢s poor performance can be largely attributed to the recent influx of competition from abroad. Essentially, the Asian manufacturers such as Samsung and Sharp infiltrated the low-end market which in turn forced European microwave companies to move into the previously Le Petit Chef dominated high end market. One statistic that basically tells the entire story is that the price of the microwave oven had dropped by 10% each year from 1996 to 2000. In an attempt to ward off competition, LPC spent hefty sums in advertising. This was overkill and caused financial issues. Another key factor was the ramp;d team being spread so thinly across so many products. Exhibit 9 highlights this by showing the products branching out in an almost ridiculous manner. Quite frankly, LPC needs to reduce its projects. In order to remedy the situation, LPC needs to do a handful of things. First, they need to realize that they cannot compete with the large foreign companies. Therefore, any thoughts of entering the low-cost market should be heavily discouraged. LPC has a niche in the high end market and they need to stick to their guns. By focusing on the high end marked, Ramp;D is also not as overextended. Next, LPC needs to differentiate their products from the competition. They need to give the buyer some incentive to fork over more cash for their expensive microwaves. Another thing that LPC should try to do is to make more components that are interchangeable between models in order to lower costs. LPC should also focus on the appearance of their microwaves, because to sell a high-end product it has to appear that way. Essentially, the appearance is the ultimate differentiating factor.
